We are now halfway through 2021 and, while vaccines provide a light at the end of this very long tunnel, the physical, mental, emotional and financial hardship caused by COVID-19 continues to permeate every level of global society.
We are seeing this impact with our brilliant students, more of whom are facing even greater and more challenging hardship this year than when COVID-19 first took hold across the world. Many are struggling, and we need to address this urgently as part of our commitment to support our most vulnerable students.
Hardship funding – An urgent need
By March this year, we had already received more requests for hardship support than we had in the whole of the 2019/20 academic year – and applications are still increasing for both UK-based and remote-learning students. Will you help us to demonstrate our belief in our students and support their future?
Almost half of these requests were made in February, as the world once again entered various degrees of lockdown. With many offer holders’ families being impacted by COVID-19 circumstances, and the daunting prospect of far fewer part-time or seasonal jobs being available during their studies, financial aid has never been so much in demand. In some cases, students and their families have lost an entire year of earnings.
Our Student Hardship Fund supports students who have fallen into short-term, unforeseen hardship, enabling them to continue with their studies and complete their degree. It ensures they can focus on their studies, with awards between £500 to £3,500 to help with accommodation and living costs, technology to assist with online learning, funds to travel home to family, or for other urgent unforeseen needs.
Your donation today could make a significant difference to a student in need. It would remove a source of anxiety, giving them the confidence to complete their degree with full focus, whether on campus or remotely. It could make the difference between continuing their LSE education and graduating from LSE, or not.
Crucially, at a time when our students’ confidence might be affected, your support demonstrates that we, the LSE community, believe in them and their future.

As a community committed to the betterment of society, last year LSE alumni, friends and partners intervened remarkably to transform incoming LSE students’ lives. Your generous philanthropy, and continued advice, support and partnership is gratefully received. Thank you.
Now we seek to address the continuing turmoil that COVID-19 has caused in some of our current students’ lives. Through your generosity and compassion, a little will go a long way to provide a helping hand in their moment of need.
